Pi Day

By emwadmin

Of course the Evil Math Wizard needs to celebrate Pi Day! So this afternoon my class made some apple pies. The night before I made the crusts, wrapping each dough ball into plastic wrap, as well as the crumb topping. I put them into groups of five. And then we talked about the procedure for making the pies: materials, process, ingredients, and then each group divided up the tasks. The main tasks were rolling and cutting out the crust along with 3 diameters, making the apple slices, and then putting on the topping. Most groups put two people on rolling, two on apple slices, and then one on topping, but the topping person moved between the two other groups to make sure they had all the supplies they needed.

Of course, it always takes longer than planned, so an hour later we had the pies in our school’s ovens and we cleaned up our classroom, did some circle and pi activities, and then served up the pie. They ate the pie, while I read “Sir Cumference and the Dragon of Pi (A Math Adventure)” by Cindy Neuschwander. It was a fun day, but boy am I tired.
