How the brain works and how it affects teaching

By emwadmin

I just read an article stressing the importance of teachers understanding how the brain works and to be mindful of this when teaching children.  Below are two of my favorite pieces of information.

“Proper nutrition and adequate sleep are also essential to learning. Although the brain is only a fraction of our body’s weight, it consumes approximately 20 percent of our energy, which makes good nutrition a critical component of learning. ”

Wow, our brain uses 20 percent of our energy, especially when learning about math, and probably less when watching brainless TV, which probably means that learning may use more calories? I think I should look into that.

“Learning is enhanced by emphasizing the big picture—and then allowing students to discover the details for themselves.”

I totally agree, I prefer to teach through providing a map as well as the big idea, and then letting my students explore how connections are made as well as filling in the gaps as they go. It makes for powerful learning!
