I spend a lot of time teaching Place Value. Typically we focus on ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands in 2-3rd grade. But I like to challenge them to go beyond. So they made a ten thousand bar (see my previous post). A small group wanted to go even further. So I challenged them to make what comes next a 100,000 block. So they first made a model. Then they started to make a full scale model.
They had to figure out how to reinforce the middle so the sides don’t collapse.
They had actually a lot of fun with the challenge, and they shared it with the rest of the school!
