Geometry is one of my favorite math topics and to make it more engaging for the whole class I do Geometry Cheerleaders or Drill Sargeants! It works well when you are reviewing types of lines and angles. Here is a list of geometry terms that I use: line, line segment, ray, angle, 45, 180, 90, obtuse, acute, right angle, perpendicular, parallel, and intersecting.
First I demonstrate the different arm positions. Most are self-explanatory, but to form a ray, I use a closed fist on one straight arm and then extend the other arm with my hand flat and straight out. I lead the class cheerleader style, by calling out “Give me a ray?” And they copy me by making a ray. I also do a drill sergeant version and say “Soldiers …. Ray.”
After they copy me a few times, and get the hang of it. I do a “Drill Down.” I just call out the commands, without showing them, and see how well they can do them. I use the honor system, and they are to sit out if they make a mistake and we see who lasts the longest. I also ask for volunteers ti lead the class. It’s quite fun.
