Circumference Craftivity – Exploring Radius, Diameter & Circumference

$2.00

Want to introduce the relationships between radius, diameter, and circumference in a hands-on artful activity? Then check out these two activities that help students become familiar with compasses to draw circles, as well as see the relationship between radius and circumference.

How can I use this product?

These activities can be used as a whole class activity, small groups/partners, as well as a math center. I also had this set up at as Family Math Night Center. The results can be put on a bulletin board or hanging up.

Also visit my my blog for more details and student examples.

What is included?

1 pdf file with 6 pages

First Activity – Random Circle Designs

• One page of instructions w/ student work examples

Students will be challenged to color these designs without two colors sharing an edge, while becoming familiar with using a compass.

Second Activity – Circle Patterns

• Two pages of instructions w/ student work examples

Students will discover by using a compass, the ratio of radius to circumference while making cool designs.

Is this available in a bundle as well?

Yes, check out My Complete Circle Kit!.

Do you have other products that are related?

This would go well with Paperclip Circumference Discovery for a complete math circumference unit.

What standards are addressed?

While the Common Core Standards don’t directly mention radius and diameter for the primary grades, this activity directly helps students generate and analyze patterns.

Common Core Standards:

Generate and analyze patterns

4.OA.5. Generate a number or shape pattern that follows a given rule. Identify apparent features of the pattern that were not explicit in the rule itself. For example, given the rule “Add 3” and the starting number 1, generate terms in the resulting sequence and observe that the terms appear to alternate between odd and even numbers. Explain informally why the numbers will continue to alternate in this way.

7.G.4 Solve real-life and mathematical problems involving angle measure, area, surface area, and volume. Know the formulas for the area and circumference of a circle and use them to solve problems; give an informal derivation of the relationship between the circumference and area of a circle.
