Fraction Task Cards Using Riddles To Build Fraction Arrays Common Core Aligned

$4.50

These hands-on fraction riddles encourage students to visualize fractions, like a logic puzzle. Using the clues, students will build fractional rectangles or arrays using color squares or tiles. Can be used for whole class or a station and numbers talks! Perfect for 3.NF.1 and 4.NF.1.

What have teachers been staying?

“I’ve been using these during our number talks and I love the critical thinking and discussions they encourage from my students!”

How can I use this product?

This file contains two formats. One format has each of the 20 riddles on one page so you can display it for a whole class, pause and have each student or group build the rectangle, and then display the next page for the possible answer. Then have a rich discussion on all the different fractions they built. The other format has two riddles on one page that can be printed in black and white or color for task cards that can be used as a math center. Both require color square tiles.

NOTE: I do have a Google Version too!

What is included?

The PDF file includes:

  • Title page, copyright info, and Common Core Standards
  • Complete Instructions
  • Color and blank grids to create squares (if you don’t have your own set of color tiles) as well as recording answers
  • One Task Card per slide for viewing on computer or whole class w/ answer after each slide
  • Four Task Cards per page for printing

There are squares tiles you can print in color or there is also a blank grid that you can print onto color paper and then cut out the 1 inch squares. There are also commercial color tile squares you can use. You can also print out the grid and have your students record their rectangles using colored pencils.

Is this available in a bundle as well?

What standards are addressed?

Common Core Standards:

Number and Operations – Fractions

Develop understanding of fractions as numbers.

3.NF.1: Understand a fraction 1/b as the quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into b equal parts; understand a fraction a/b as the quantity formed by a parts of size 1/b.

4.NF.1: Explain why a fraction a/b is equivalent to a fraction (n × a)/(n × b) by using visual fraction models, with attention to how the number and size of the parts differ even though the two fractions themselves are the same size. Use this principle to recognize and generate equivalent fractions.

Measurement and Data

Geometric measurement: understand concepts of area and relate area to multiplication and to addition.

3.MD.5: Recognize area as an attribute of plane figures and understand concepts of area measurement. a. A square with side length 1 unit, called “a unit square,” is said to have “one square unit” of area, and can be used to measure area. b. A plane figure which can be covered without gaps or overlaps by n unit squares is said to have an area of n square units.

3.MD.6: Measure areas by counting unit squares (square cm, square m, square in, square ft, and improvised units).
